A large majority of the new holdings had new houses built on them. Many of the existing crofts which were enlarged had existing houses on them improved or enlarged. Few crofts have been created or enlarged since. However, very little has been written about the new houses themselves. What were they like, and why? How did they differ from those already there? Were they successful? And what was their legacy? Addressing these and other questions lies at the core of this book.
