Gaining Back the Ground: Publicly Funded Land Initiatives in Harris since the Clearances
Harris was a hot spot for land settlement schemes from 1900 to World War II. Several were on land bought by the Governments of the day.
Over 100 years later, two large-scale and heavily publicly financed community land buyouts have occurred, bringing two-thirds of the island into community ownership.
Are both of these publicly financed initiatives the key to the island recovering from the detrimental impacts of the infamous nineteenth-century Clearances?
